What's an umbrella policy?

An umbrella policy offers liability protection beyond the limits of your other personal insurance policies.

If something happens and you're held financially responsible, umbrella insurance can help pay for covered claims after you reach the limits of your other policies. Those other policies include auto insurance, homeowners insurance, rental property insurance, renters insurance and watercraft insurance.

Umbrella coverage can help protect your finances, including the things you own, plus your savings, investments and future wages. It could also help you avoid the stress of a lengthy lawsuit. Plus, your umbrella insurance covers legal costs beyond the limits of your other policies.

What does an umbrella policy cover?

Our umbrella policy helps cover excess liability for you, your spouse and other financial dependents. Here are some examples where umbrella coverage could help protect your assets and wages.

  • Accidents With a Vehicle

The young driver in your family makes a left turn across traffic and causes a collision. Your auto policy might not be enough to cover the injuries.

  • Accidents at Home

Someone slips and falls on your property, causing severe injuries and medical costs totaling $500,000. Your homeowners policy might not be enough to cover those bills.

  • Accidents at Your Rental Property

An electrical fire results in a tenant's death. The family sues you for $1 million. Your rental property policy might not be enough to cover their pain and suffering. Learn about rental property insurance, or landlord insurance.

  • Accidents With Your Dog

An older neighbor is visiting, and your excited dog knocks him over. Your neighbor breaks his hip in the fall. Your homeowners insurance might not cover the total cost of the injury.

Umbrella insurance FAQ

Personal umbrella insurance excludes liability arising from any business, business property or professional services. If you need liability coverage for your business, we offer small business insurance.

The USAA Insurance Agency also offers the following business policies:

This requirement allows us to underwrite the policy appropriately and streamlines the claims process as we handle the entire claim.

The higher limits on your primary policies help protect your financial well-being. If something happens and you need to file a claim, it may help pay for losses over what your primary policy covers. If the limit on your primary policy is lower than what's required, you'll have to pay the difference out of pocket.

If your dog seriously injures someone and you're found to be at fault, your homeowners insurance might not pay enough to cover the resulting medical bills. An umbrella policy could provide additional liability coverage.

When considering umbrella insurance, people often look at their risk of facing a lawsuit. For example, if they own a rental property or second home, they could be at higher risk. They may also consider the assets they could lose due to a lawsuit. Umbrella insurance offers additional liability protection for individuals and families. It extends liability coverage beyond the limits of other insurance policies. If you're sued, a policy could help cover damages and legal expenses.
