License plates and registration
There are 4 types of license plate registrations available through in-country vehicle registration offices:
- Military transit plates — available from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, or SHAPE, registration office
- Diplomatic or consulate plates — available from the U.S. embassy or a U.S. consulate
- Local Belgian civilian plates — available from a local registration office
- Local Belgian transit plates — available from a local registration office
You need an international motor insurance card to register a vehicle in Belgium for the first time for a military, diplomatic or consulate plate.
To register with local civilian or transit plates, you need to get a pink registration application form from an inspection office, a car dealer or customs office. You also need an original international motor insurance card and a yellow or white insurance sticker for the pink form.
Report your license plate number on usaa.com or the mobile app or call us as soon as you have it. Failure to do so could result in a fine and seizure of your vehicle.
Belgian law requires us to report your license plate number to a vehicle registration database. Local police forces and insurers use the database to verify coverage.
Proof of insurance
We’ll email you an international motor insurance card, or green card, as proof of insurance for the term of the policy. You'll get a renewal every year the policy remains active. Make sure to always carry this card in the vehicle.
