More coverage when you need it
It can replace some or all of the SGLI or FSGLI coverage you lose after separating.
You can buy coverage up to these limits:
- Service members or Reservists: Up to double your base coverage with a max of $500,000
- Spouses: Up to $100,000
- Children: An additional child rider up to $25,000
Limits to using MFIR
Each stand-alone policy with MFIR has a one-time purchase of additional coverage as a separate term or permanent policy. You have to use the rider within a certain time after leaving the military.
- Honorable separation or retirement: You have 360 days.
- Medical retirement: You have up to 2 years and 240 days.

Yes. If you have your own policy with the rider before your spouse leaves the military, you can use it within 360 days of their separation or retirement.

It may be called Military Protection Plus if it’s combined with other riders. , ,
An MFIR expires after you use it on any of your policies. It also ends on the first policy anniversary after you turn 70.
If you convert your term policy to a permanent one before you activate your MFIR, you may lose it.
