Homeowners insurance FAQ
Replacement cost is the amount it takes to rebuild your home or replace damaged items at today's value.
Actual cash value is the value of your home or covered items that could be damaged. You also need to factor in depreciation, or lost value over time, to estimate your home’s actual cash value.
Our standard policy includes water damage coverage. This helps repair or replace property damaged by something sudden and accidental, like a burst pipe or water heater.
In most states, your homeowners policy may provide limited protection for mold damage if a covered water loss caused it. But it usually won't cover water damage or mold that happened slowly over time, was caused on purpose or came from a flood.
The amount you pay depends on the coverage and deductibles you choose. Increasing your deductible can help lower your premium but also means you pay more out of pocket when you file a claim.
The size, age and location of your home also play a role.
Follow these simple steps to make the switch:
- Buy a new policy before you cancel the old one.
- Let your mortgage servicer know you're switching insurers and when the new policy starts.
