Valuable Personal Property insurance
For as little as $2 a month, See note 7 Valuable Personal Property, or VPP, insurance provides extra protection for items like jewelry, guns and more. And there's no deductible.
Renters insurance helps protect your property and finances. It can pay to repair or replace your things if they’re stolen or damaged by a covered event. Liability coverage helps when you’re responsible for someone else’s injury or damage to their property.
Some landlords may require you to have a renters policy. Whether you're in an apartment, house, dorm or military base, renters insurance can help protect you from the unexpected.
We offer USAA Rental Property Insurance, also known as landlord insurance. It provides liability coverage and helps pay to repair or rebuild your rental if it’s damaged or destroyed by a covered loss.
Renters insurance helps cover you and your stuff when the unexpected happens. Here are some of the things we can help protect you against.
If you’re liable for someone’s injury or damage to their property, this may protect you and cover your legal costs.
If someone steals something you own, like your phone or laptop, this can help replace it based on what it would cost today. It can also help protect you from identity theft. See note 1
If flood waters damage your furniture and you need to replace it, our renters insurance can help cover the cost.
If your things are damaged or fall during an earthquake, shock wave or tremor, our policy helps protect them.
If smoke from a fire in your dorm ruins your clothes, renters insurance can help you replace them.
Home and renters policies cover losses like theft, vandalism, fires and most weather-related damage. Our electronics coverage options offer protection for more common accidents. See note 2
So if you accidentally damage or lose your laptop, we'll help pay to repair or replace it up to your coverage limit.
You may need renters insurance if:
You or your child live in a dorm, on a base or rent a room.
You or your child rent a house, condo, townhome or apartment.
Your landlord requires you to get renters insurance.
You need help with repairing or replacing items stolen or damaged in a covered loss.
You want to make sure your friends are covered if they get hurt or their stuff is accidentally damaged in your home.
You're moving, traveling, PCSing or keeping stuff in storage.
You live in an area that has destructive weather like hail, tornadoes or hurricanes.
We understand that you have unique insurance needs while serving your country. That’s why we offer renters insurance with benefits designed for military members.
For example, we’ll waive your deductible if your military equipment gets damaged or stolen. See note 3 And if you live on base, you can save up to 28% on your renters policy. See note 4
Young adults moving away from home may have unique living situations. Renters insurance covers you as a first-time renter in a dorm, on base or in your first apartment.
Help protect your finances and your stuff with USAA Renters Insurance.
You can expect to pay as little as $10 a month for a renters policy. See note 5 What you pay depends on how much you cover and what deductible you choose.
A higher deductible can mean you pay less for your policy, but you'd pay more out of pocket if you file a claim. With a lower deductible, you pay a little more per month but less for a covered claim.
If you're looking to save on renters insurance, we have discounts to help make it work for your budget. Plus, you can save when you bundle renters insurance with other USAA policies. See note 6
Everybody’s needs are different. We can help you customize a policy that’s right for you.
The amount of coverage you need depends on how much your belongings are worth. You should consider:
Liability coverage helps protect you from lawsuits and the cost of someone else’s medical bills. You need to consider:
For as little as $2 a month, See note 7 Valuable Personal Property, or VPP, insurance provides extra protection for items like jewelry, guns and more. And there's no deductible.
Help protect your furry friends from head to tail for most accidents and illnesses with coverage through the USAA Insurance Agency.
Sometimes your renters insurance can’t cover all the medical bills from someone’s injury. Umbrella insurance can help pay the remainder of a covered claim after you reach your renters policy limit.
It depends. If you use a professional moving company and a shipping contract, renters insurance may give you coverage if the moving company loses your things.
Your policy may also cover some types of damage, but keep in mind this won't include breaking, marring or scratching caused by the moving company. See note 8 You may want to consider buying their coverage for added protection.
If you already have renters insurance, remember to update your policy with your new address and be sure it still meets your needs.
We make it easy to change policies if you buy a house and get USAA Homeowners Insurance. Just make sure your homeowners policy is active and your things arrive at your new home before you cancel your renters insurance.
Your renters policy automatically covers family members who live with you, including your spouse and children. Roommates need to buy their own renters insurance. You can update your policy anytime by logging on to usaa.com.
Renters insurance covers your stuff when it’s in storage, up to your policy’s limit. This applies whether you live in the U.S. or overseas. Some storage companies might require you to get coverage.
Keep in mind that your renters insurance won’t cover broken items or damage caused by mildew, rodents or insects. You may want to consider adding the storage company’s coverage for more protection.
You don’t need both policies for the same location.
But you may want a separate renters policy if your child is away at school. Or if you own your home and rent another home part of the year, you may want renters insurance for the home you’re renting.
