What’s medical payments coverage?

Also called MedPay, medical payments coverage helps pay for accident-related bodily injury costs for you and your passengers. It doesn’t matter who’s at fault. Or it can cover you as a pedestrian or passenger.

You can add it to a new or existing auto policy. MedPay isn’t available in Minnesota, New York, North Dakota or Oregon.

Where is it required?

While it’s optional in most states, MedPay is a legal requirement in Maine and New Hampshire.

What does medical payments cover?

  • Medical bills including health insurance deductibles and copays

  • Ambulance services

  • X-rays

  • Surgical procedures

  • Funeral expenses

  • Extended nursing services, rehabilitation and hospitalizations

What if MedPay isn’t available in your state?

You can typically get similar coverage called personal injury protection, or PIP, instead.

Like MedPay, it provides protection regardless of who causes an accident.

How’s PIP different from MedPay?

PIP offers benefits if you can't work and has higher limits. It’s also required in more states.

How does medical payments coverage work?

MedPay can help cover you after an accident whether you have health insurance or not. The steps you need to take will also be different depending on your situation.

If you don’t have health insurance

After you pay your medical bills, you can file a MedPay claim to get reimbursed for some of your expenses.

If you do have health insurance

Your policy will help cover your medical bills, while MedPay can help take care of your deductibles and copays.

Do you need MedPay if you have bodily injury liability coverage?

Having both can help better protect you because they provide different types of coverage.

MedPay covers your medical expenses whether or not you cause a car accident.

Bodily injury liability coverage only helps pay medical expenses for the other driver or their passengers if you’re at fault. It’s also required in most states.
