What's personal injury protection coverage?

Also known as PIP or no-fault insurance, this coverage kicks in when you or your passengers are injured in a car accident, regardless of who’s at fault.

It covers medical expenses and things like lost wages and household services if you can't work. PIP also covers you as a pedestrian.

If you live in a no-fault state, you and the other driver can both receive benefits from your insurance companies. No-fault laws also restrict your rights to sue each other.

You can add PIP to a new or existing auto policy.

What does PIP cover?

  • Ambulance services

  • Emergency room visits

  • Follow-up medical visits and rehab services

  • Prescriptions

  • Lost wages

  • Household services like child care or cleaning

  • Funeral expenses

Does your state require it?

What if personal injury protection isn’t available in your state?

If PIP isn’t an option for you, you can typically get similar coverage called medical payments coverage, or MedPay.

Like PIP, it provides protection no matter who causes the accident.

How’s MedPay different from PIP?

MedPay only covers medical bills and has lower limits — it doesn’t offer benefits if you can’t work.

How does PIP coverage work?

If you get injured in an accident, the driver’s insurance might cover your medical bills – if they have enough liability coverage.

If they’re an uninsured or underinsured motorist, PIP can help cover your expenses.

Do you need PIP if you have health insurance?

Having both can help better protect you because they provide different types of coverage.

Health insurance may take care of your medical bills. But PIP coverage could cover things like household expenses and lost wages if you’re unable to work after an accident.

If you live in a state that requires this coverage, you may need to file a PIP claim before you use your health insurance. Some states allow you to use both at same time.
