Getting Original Medicare coverage

Medicare is health insurance provided by the government for people 65 and over. It's also for those younger than 65 who are eligible because of a disability.

  • 1. Start with Medicare.

If eligible, you can get Original Medicare through the federal government. It includes Part A, hospital insurance, and Part B, which covers doctor visits and outpatient care. You may delay Part B enrollment if you have insurance through an employer. To learn more about signing up for Original Medicare, visit medicare.gov.

  • 2. Consider additional insurance.

After enrolling in Original Medicare, you can consider the additional Medicare coverage options available through private insurance companies. USAA Life Insurance Company and our trusted insurance providers Humana and Aetna are committed to providing plans to meet your needs.

Get more coverage as a veteran.

USAA is dedicated to helping military veterans with their health insurance needs. If you're a veteran, you have the option of adding private Medicare insurance to your VA coverage. A low-premium plan that includes bundled benefits could complement your VA health care.

  • Medicare SupplementKnown as a Medigap plan

This coverage fills in the gaps of Original Medicare. It helps with out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover like copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Plus, you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare.

  • Prescription Drug PlanKnown as Medicare Part D

A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, or PDP helps pay for the cost of medications. A stand-alone PDP can provide coverage for drugs you take regularly or may take in the future. If you're new to Medicare, it's important to understand how optional Part D plans work.
