The law doesn’t require collision and comprehensive coverage for damage to your car. But your lender or leasing office may require collision and comprehensive coverage for as long as the vehicle is financed or leased.

Canada
Your auto policy meets or exceeds requirements for your vehicle to be driven in Canada and covers you for bodily injury and property damage liability.
A copy of your current auto insurance ID card or declarations page is enough proof of insurance. You should always keep these documents in your vehicle.
If you rent a vehicle in Canada, your USAA Auto Insurance doesn’t cover you for liability and physical damage.
Mexico
The Mexican government requires that tourists get auto liability insurance from a company based in Mexico.
Although your USAA auto policy may give you limited coverage within a certain distance of the U.S.-Mexican border, it doesn’t give you what Mexico requires.
You can check your policy for details, but you’ll need to obtain the insurance required by Mexico for vehicles you own.
Your state may require a Statement of Financial Responsibility, also known as either an SR-22 or FR-44. If you must file an SR-22 or FR-44, then your state, a judge or court system will tell you.
If you’re not sure this is required, contact your state’s driver’s license authority. An SR-22 or FR-44 is often filed:
- To certify to the state that liability coverage is in force and will remain in force until the filing is canceled.
- To reinstate driving privileges.
- To obtain a new driver’s license.
To get an SR-22 or FR-44, you must have an auto insurance policy in effect. And the driver requiring the statement must be listed on the policy.
If you’re unable to provide proof of financial responsibility when required, the penalties may include:
- Suspension or revocation of driver’s license.
- Surrender of license plates.
- Arrest.

It depends on your policy location and state laws. Any driving-related accident could affect your policy for about three years.
If you’ve had a major accident in the past five years, that could also impact the rate we offer.
Not usually. Accidents that aren’t your fault don’t affect rates the same way as those that are your fault. Whether you’re at fault or not, a claim can cause your rates to go up.

Multiple accidents with a short period of time, even if not your fault, could impact your rate, depending on the applicable state law.

It depends on your situation. Your vehicle may be totaled or declared a total loss for several reasons:
- Repairs may not be economical or practical.
- It may not be possible to restore the vehicle to a safe, pre-accident condition.
- State laws may require us to declare it a total loss.
If we find that your vehicle is a total loss caused by a covered event, then USAA pays the actual cash value of the vehicle minus your deductible. Having physical damage coverage like comprehensive and collision may not mean that your vehicle will be replaced with a car just like the one you have.
It’s important to understand the value of your vehicle and be aware that the cost of the comprehensive, collision coverage and deductibles add up to less than the cash value of your vehicle.

Act immediately to get the recall repairs done.
If you’ve received a vehicle safety recall notice from your vehicle’s manufacture, follow the instructions in the notice and complete the repairs as soon as possible.
If you discovered the recall another way, contact a local dealership or the manufacturer to get information and schedule repairs.
